Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Example: uranium enrichment
Similar tasks: nitric acid caprolactam production
When uranium ore is converted into uranium hexafluoride (UF6) for uranium enrichment employing the diffusion process, or also when producing nitric acid and nitrogenous fertilizers for farming, laughing gas is produced by several undesirable side reactions.
Thermal decomposition of nitrous oxide (N2O) implies the need for a specially designed regenerative thermal oxidation system (RTO) with a higher combustion chamber temperature and a longer residence time.
Aqueous ammonia is injected into the combustion chamber to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) partially formed from the N2O decomposition by an SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction).
Conclusion: Nitrous oxide is a powerful greenhouse gas with a global warming potential of 310 (1 ton of N2O is equivalent to 310 tons of CO2). With CTP’s solution not only target emissions can be reached, but also certificates are generated which can be sold on the market. The financial benefit of selling certificates may even be higher than the operating costs of the installed system!
